Ada Limón Selected as the City of Sonoma’s 2026 Treasure Artist

Ada Limón sits cross-legged on an outdoor bench surrounded by potted plants smiling warmly as she looks toward the camera.The City of Sonoma is proud to announce that Ada Limón has been selected as the 2026 Treasure Artist by the Cultural and Fine Arts Commission at their November 18th Meeting. Limón, an internationally celebrated poet and the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States, grew up in Sonoma Valley and has recently returned to the community.

Limón is the first poet to receive this honor and only the second writer recognized since the program began in 1983. Her achievements include seven acclaimed books of poetry, major national and international awards, a MacArthur Fellowship, and recognition as a 2024 Time Magazine Woman of the Year. Her work often reflects the landscapes and experiences of Sonoma Valley, making this recognition especially meaningful for the community.

Nominations highlighting her artistic excellence, deep Sonoma roots, and contributions to local students and readers. Commissioners shared that their selection came after thoughtful consideration of many exceptional nominees, noting the remarkable range of artistry throughout Sonoma Valley.

Limón will be honored at a public reception in 2026 where the community will have the opportunity to celebrate her achievements. Event details will be announced next year.
