At its final meeting of the year on Wednesday, December 18, the Sonoma City Council held its annual reorganization, selecting leadership for the 2026 calendar year and recognizing the service of outgoing Mayor Patricia Farrar-Rivas.
Each year, the Sonoma City Council votes to select a Mayor and Vice Mayor from among its members. For 2026, the Council selected Ron Wellander, who served as Vice Mayor in 2025, to serve as Mayor, and Sandra Lowe to serve as Vice Mayor.

The reorganization began with a recognition of Mayor Farrar-Rivas for her year of service. Vice Mayor Wellander presented her with a commemorative crystal gavel, marking the conclusion of her term as Mayor. Council members and members of the public then shared remarks acknowledging her professionalism, thoughtful and respectful leadership on the dais, and her strong commitment to social justice and climate action.
Speakers also recognized Mayor Farrar-Rivas’ dedication to community engagement, noting her consistent presence at City events both large and small—from ribbon cuttings for new businesses to signature community events and gatherings. The recognition concluded with a standing ovation.
Following the tributes, the Council proceeded with nominations and votes for Mayor and Vice Mayor. Once officially selected as Mayor, Ron Wellander was handed the gavel by Mayor Farrar-Rivas and presided over the remainder of the meeting, including the selection of Vice Mayor.
