Sonoma, CA – February 16, 2024 – The City of Sonoma proudly announces Wayne Schake as the 2024 Honorary Alcalde, recognizing his unwavering commitment and outstanding contributions to the community. The announcement was made during the City Council Meeting on February 7th, where Mayor John Gurney shared the nomination with the community.
Reflecting on the significance of the Alcalde title, Mayor Gurney stated, “The criteria that we look at when we make the selection is they need to be someone who is involved heavily in the community, involved in a broad spectrum of community service, served in leadership roles in at least one non-profit organization, spearheaded at least one community-serving project without compensation, and be well known for consistent behind-the-scenes good deeds.”
This sentiment aligns seamlessly with the heartfelt nominations received for Wayne Schake. His decades-long commitment to community service, highlighted by his involvement in diverse projects and organizations, resonated with the Mayor’s vision for the Alcalde.
“He just represents and exemplifies the kind of dedication and commitment to community that we would like to see with everybody,” Mayor Gurney emphasized.
Wayne Schake, a veteran of the Air Force, has been an unsung hero in Sonoma, involved in projects ranging from park clean-ups to educational initiatives. His dedication extends to serving on various community boards and volunteering for nonprofits like the Boys and Girls Club, La Luz, and the Vintage House.
As one nomination letter expressed, “He makes Sonoma a better place for all of us. He’s been involved with many of the local non-profits, working with the Boys and Girls Club, La Luz, the boosters at the high school, the Vintage House.”
Another nominator highlighted Schake’s impact, stating, “Whether volunteering to improve the functioning of a local elementary school play yard, making sure our library book sales are successful, or showing up with coffee and donuts at volunteer functions, he is there day in and day out, year in and year out.”
The Mayor’s endorsement and the unanimous support from the City Council solidify Wayne Schake’s position as the 2024 Alcalde. Beyond the title, Schake will take on responsibilities such being in a lead position in the 4th of July parade and receiving special invitations to key community events.
