About the Honorary Alcalde Tradition
Alcaldes in California date back to the pueblo system and the establishment of town councils (ayuntamientos). Councils were headed by a mayor (alcalde) who served as a key local leader, hearing a wide range of issues, from land disputes and business dealings to criminal matters. Over time, many of these responsibilities were divided among multiple elected and appointed officials, but the title “alcalde” endures as a ceremonial honor in Sonoma.
Today, Sonoma’s Honorary Alcalde tradition recognizes residents whose long-term service, leadership, and quiet dedication have made a lasting difference in the community.
