City Update on Local Protests Planned in Sonoma

Posted on June 2, 2020

The City of Sonoma supports the people’s right to free speech and to peacefully assemble.  We are aware of the protests planned by local community members for this evening and tomorrow afternoon in the Sonoma Plaza.

The City and Sonoma Police Department are working in coordination with local organizers of the events to ensure our community members can exercise their free speech in a safe and respectful manner. We expect that these gatherings will be peaceful demonstrations based on the proactive, positive and open communication between local organizers and the City’s public safety team.

The Police Department welcomes a community dialogue and is committed to supporting peaceful protesters. We are aware that neighboring communities have experienced unlawful behavior surrounding similar gatherings.  Our local Police Department is actively preparing for this dynamic situation. Chief Rodriguez and his team have smart, community-focused plans to address any escalation.  All public safety agencies within the County are coordinating and ready to respond and support each other with resources as needed.

We encourage local businesses, residents, and protestors to work together and respect each others’ rights and safety.  We are a community that cares about and supports each other, even in these challenging times.

The City will continue to provide updates as needed on our website and Facebook page.
