Sonoma Valley Historical Society

Website: sonomavalleyhistory.org

Description: Sonoma Valley Historical Society was established in January of 1937 by a small group of citizens to collect, share, and preserve the history of the Valley of the Moon. The Society, a non-profit organization, has operated continuously ever since that time.

Throughout our existence, the Society has provided education through exhibits housed throughout the Valley. As well as presenting informative talks and walks, and providing educational materials to community members, teachers, authors, educators, and historians around the world.

Since 1979, we have been sharing the Sonoma Valley story at our museum in Depot Park. You’ll discover how the Valley of the Moon evolved and flourished from native peoples to contemporary times. The revitalized Sonoma Valley History Museum opens in late 2025.

At the Marcy House Archives & Research Center, we collect and steward material that tells the Sonoma Valley story from Pythian Road at the north to San Pablo Bay to the south.

The stewardship of our historic resources maintains key character-defining features so that authenticity and richness are conserved in our Valley. It takes the efforts of the community as a whole to make preservation relevant including the reuse of historic resources in innovative ways.
