Fire Prevention Week Reminds Households to Plan Ahead

Posted on October 7, 2019

Fire Prevention WeekPermit Sonoma’s Fire Prevention Division invites the public to celebrate Fire Prevention Week, October 6-12, 2019. The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) theme for the week “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” reminds the community to take action by developing and practicing a home fire escape plan.

“The County of Sonoma is committed to the safety of all those living in and visiting Sonoma County,” said Board of Supervisors Chair David Rabbitt. “Households can increase their safety by creating home escape plans and practicing them twice a year.”

According to NFPA, half of all US home fire deaths occur at night between the hours of 11:00 pm and 7:00 am, of which three out of five of those deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. A home escape plan includes working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. The plan also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place.
