The City of Sonoma is launching a new initiative to build a Cultural Asset Inventory—and we’re inviting the community to help identify the people, places, events, and traditions that define our city’s unique cultural identity.
This effort is part of the City’s Public Art Program development and supports a future application to become a designated California Cultural District, a recognition that highlights places with rich, thriving cultural life.
What Is a Cultural Asset?
Cultural assets are the creative, historic, and community-driven elements that contribute to a community’s vibrancy. These can include:
-
People – Artists, musicians, historians, storytellers, and cultural leaders
-
Places – Studios, theaters, historic buildings, murals, and gathering spaces
-
Organizations – Cultural nonprofits, arts collectives, and community groups
-
Practices – Traditions, foodways, festivals, and ceremonies
-
Events – Celebrations, parades, exhibitions—past or present
How to Participate
We are currently seeking input from the community to help create this inventory. This initiative is intended to record cultural assets located within the Sonoma city limits, but we also welcome mention of nearby influences that contribute to the city’s cultural identity.
Please submit your cultural asset(s) by Friday, July 25, 2025
Submit yours online on our Cultural Asset Inventory page.
Your input will help shape future arts programming and ensure Sonoma’s creative legacy is recognized, preserved, and celebrated for generations to come.
