With the recent rain — and more sprinkles possible in the coming days — now is an important time to check your yard and dump out any standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Even small amounts can produce mosquitoes.
The Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District recommends these simple steps to help protect yourself, your family, and your neighbors:
- Use repellent with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, Para-menthane-diol (PMD), or oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE).
- Eliminate standing water after rain. Empty containers, plant saucers, and anything that collects water.
- Stock permanent ponds with free mosquitofish from the District.
- Maintain pools and hot tubs with proper chlorination.
- Clean bird baths and animal bowls at least twice a week.
- Cover rain barrels and water storage containers with secure lids or screens.
- Seal septic tanks and screen vent pipes.
Report Dead Birds
Dead birds can be an early warning of West Nile virus activity. If you see one, report it online at westnile.ca.gov.
Local Detection
The Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District has confirmed the first detection of West Nile virus for 2025 in a dead bird. While not unexpected, this is a reminder that the virus remains active in our region.
