As the holidays approach, we want to take a moment to share our appreciation for everyone in Sonoma who continues to make climate-smart choices—large and small. Your efforts are reflected in Sonoma’s Climate Action Strategies, were created by the Climate Action Commission as roadmap for reducing emissions, promoting sustainability, and building resilience.

Here are a few ways you can support Sonoma’s shared climate goals this season:

Shop Sonoma to Support Community and Climate

Looking for winter events, local makers, or special holiday gifts? Sonoma has everything you need right here at home. Choosing to shop local reduces shipping emissions, supports small businesses, and strengthens the community we all rely on.

When you can, consider walking, biking, or taking the fare-free Shuttle (Route 32) to local shops and holiday events. These small choices align with Sonoma’s low-carbon transportation strategies—and keep our local economy vibrant.

Local businesses also tend to have a smaller environmental footprint, offer personalized service, host community events, and help preserve Sonoma’s character. By shopping locally this season, you’re not just finding thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gifts—you’re investing directly in your neighbors and your community.

Visit the Sonoma Valley Chamber of Commerce and Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau websites to explore local shops, markets, and holiday happenings. And don’t forget to bring your reusable shopping bag!

Reduce Waste & Compost What You Can

From holiday meals to fall yard care, every bit of composting helps reduce emissions and build healthy soils. These habits support Sonoma’s Zero Waste and organics-recovery strategies—and they align with California’s statewide Recycling Reimagined campaign, which encourages residents to recycle better, compost more, and reduce waste at the source. A few quick and easy actions you can take this month:

  • Compost leaves, food scraps, and yard debris
  • Recycle packaging and reuse bags and boxes
  • Choose recyclable or reusable wrapping instead of glittery or foil options
  • When in doubt, check local recycling guidelines or visit Recycling Reimagined for tips on sorting and reducing contamination.

Save Energy & Prepare for Winter Weather

Keep the season cozy and bright – the Climate Smart way. Seasonal habits can support Sonoma’s energy-efficiency and resilience strategies:

  • Use LED holiday lights and set timers
  • Seal drafts to stay warm efficiently
  • Adjust the thermostat when asleep or away
  • Clear gutters and keep storm drains free of leaves
