The State of California has released the 2025 California Building Standards Code, which will take effect on January 1, 2026. As part of the required triennial update cycle, the City of Sonoma will transition from the current 2022 code set to the new 2025 edition. The City Council will consider the adoption ordinance at its meeting this Wednesday [see agenda].
Submittal Deadlines & Transition Policy
The building code in effect at the time a complete permit application is submitted determines the standards that apply to that project for its full duration. Due to the City Hall holiday closure schedule, the following deadlines will be strictly observed:
Applications Submitted on or Before December 23, 2025
Projects formally submitted and accepted as complete by this date will be reviewed and inspected under the 2022 California Building Standards Code.
Applications Submitted On or After December 24, 2025
All applications submitted on or after this date must demonstrate full compliance with the 2025 California Building Standards Code.
No exceptions will be made.
Applicants with active or upcoming projects are encouraged to plan ahead to ensure timely submittals.
