Burial Map & Locator
Explore Sonoma’s public cemeteries with our interactive Burial Map & Locator. The map allows you to find burial locations at the City of Sonoma’s three cemeteries—Valley Cemetery, Mountain Cemetery, and Veterans’ Cemetery—as well as learn about cemetery sections and view available records.
How to use the map
- Zoom in/out with your mouse wheel or the on-screen buttons.
- Hover over or click an icon to see details in the left panel.
- Use the layer list to toggle cemeteries or reference areas on/off (if available).
Note: Due to erosion and the passage of time, some graves are damaged or have been lost. Not all burials can be fully identified.
Beyond helping you locate individual burials, the map also includes reference layers and historical information. The sections below explain how the cemeteries are organized and the sources used to create the dataset.
Historic vs. Annex Areas
Mountain and Valley Cemeteries include Historic and Annex sections:
- Historic Areas began in the 1840s. Though active burials are less frequent, families with existing plots may still use them.
- Annex Areas were developed in the 1940s with a formal grid from the outset, making navigation simpler.
Area Records (Reference Layers)
Two reference systems are included to support research:
- Cemetery Record Areas – The City’s official cemetery record designations.
- King Map Areas – A survey initiated in the 1990s through the Sonoma Valley Historical Society.
Data sources & limitations
This map reflects surveys conducted in 2024–2025 by intern Eowyn Medeiros and a team with the Sonoma Valley Historical Society. Natural erosion and historical conditions mean the dataset is incomplete; some graves may never be fully identified. We’ll continue refining records as information becomes available.
