Citywide Tree Inventory Project

The City of Sonoma is launching its first comprehensive tree inventory to better understand, manage, and care for our community’s trees. Trees are an essential part of Sonoma’s character — they provide shade, improve air quality, support wildlife, and enhance the beauty of our neighborhoods.

Over a ten-day period, October 1–9, 2025, professional arborists from PlanIT Geo will conduct a survey of trees throughout the city. Using modern mapping software, this effort will create an up-to-date database that will help the City track tree health, identify potential risks, and plan for future care and investments in our urban tree canopy.

This project is also one of the City’s adopted climate action strategies and is supported by the Climate Action and Sustainability Commission. By understanding and strengthening Sonoma’s tree canopy, the City is taking a tangible step toward building local climate resilience.
