Utility Services

The Finance Department is responsible for meter reading and billing services for the 5,000 Water utility customers. The department bills customers every month. See current water rates for City of Sonoma customers.

There are several ways to pay your water bill: online, by mail, or in-person at City Hall during regular business hours. We are able to take cash, check, money order, and/or credit card at City Hall.

For water service questions, to report a leak, or water quality issues, please call (707) 938-3681 for immediate assistance during normal business hours. To report a water leak outside normal business hours, please call the Sonoma Police Department dispatch (handled through the Sonoma County Sheriff’s office) at (707) 996-3601. They will contact a City utility staff member to report the emergency.

Customers must complete and sign a City of Sonoma Water Application. This form may be obtained at City Hall, No. 1 The Plaza, Sonoma, CA 95476, by calling (707) 933-2244 or emailing the Finance Department at finance@sonomacity.org. The completed form may be returned by mail, in person or via email.

New residential service customers (includes renters, agents, & lessees) are required to make a $150 deposit along with the application. The deposit may be refunded in two years (with good payment history). New service can normally be initiated within 24 hours of receipt of signed application and deposit. The City accepts cash, check, debit card and credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover) payments.

Customers wishing to disconnect water service must complete a Water Turn Off Form and submit it to City Hall, No. 1 The Plaza, Sonoma, CA 95476. You may also e-mail a signed copy of the water turn off form to the Finance Department at finance@sonomacity.org , however; it is the customer’s responsibility to confirm receipt of turn off applications sent via email. Staff will make make every effort to terminate service on the requested date. Service will not be disconnected on Fridays, over the weekends or on holidays. Following disconnection of service, a final bill will be sent out which typically takes about two weeks to process.

After hours emergency call Police Department Dispatch at (707) 996-3601. Dispatch (handled through the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office) will contact a City utility staff member to report the emergency.

Customer Responsibilities

Bills are due upon receipt and must be paid within 20 days from the billing date. Bills are payable in cash or credit/debit card at City Hall, by check, or online. FAILURE TO RECEIVE A BILL DOES NOT EXCUSE PENALTIES OR SERVICE DISCONNECTION. Postmarks will not be accepted as the payment receipt date. Payments received after 4:00 P.M. will be posted the following business day. If you are unable to pay this bill within the required time frame, you must contact the City Water Department during regular service hours prior to the due date. A service charge is included on all accounts based on meter size and is a fixed charge. This fee covers costs of maintaining the City's water system.

  • Turnoff for non-payment $114
  • Returned checks $25

Customers are responsible for their account until the City is notified to stop service. Until such notice has been made, the premises shall be deemed occupied by the customer and late fees and payment liability continues.

Water meters are the property of the City. An 18” meter box clearance must be maintained on each side for City access.

Sewer Services

Wastewater collection and treatment services in Sonoma are provided by the Sonoma Valley County Sanitation District.  For sewer connection hook-up or service information please contact the Sonoma Valley  County Sanitation District.

Water Service for Unincorporated Sonoma Valley

Water customers located in the unincorporated areas of Sonoma Valley (outside the City limits) should contact Valley of the Moon Water District  or call (707) 996-1037 for water services.
