Colleen Ferguson, PE, LS
Colleen Ferguson became City of Sonoma’s Public Works Director/City Engineer in July 2017. Colleen brought to the City of Sonoma more than 25 years of extensive experience and increasing levels of responsibility in municipal public works. As the Public Works Director/City Engineer, Colleen reports to the City Manager and is responsible for operating, maintaining, and upgrading the City’s water and transportation systems, parks, and cemeteries.
Colleen previously served as Deputy Director – Capital Projects Engineering for the City of Santa Rosa Department of Transportation and Public Works where she was responsible for design and construction of the City’s water, wastewater, storm drainage, traffic/transportation, buildings, parks, and other municipal infrastructure with a staff of 55.
Colleen is a registered Professional Civil Engineer and a licensed Land Surveyor. She is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Public Works Association. She was honored to be selected by the American Society of Civil Engineers as the 2017 Outstanding Civil Engineer in the Public Sector in the State of California. The award noted that “Colleen Ferguson exemplifies the qualities that make the best civil engineers in our profession great: technical mastery, strong ethics, professional achievement, advocacy, and leadership.”
Colleen obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in civil engineering from San Jose State University. She grew up in Petaluma and completed her first two years of engineering education at Santa Rosa Junior College. Her public works experience began as an engineering intern with the City of Petaluma during two summer college breaks.
